THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. WINNER AND ADDITIONAL GIVEAWAY ITEMS WILL BE ANNOUNCED TOMORROW.
It’s Earth Day here on Firefly Skys, and in honor of our planet I’m offering a giveaway – and not just a little giveaway either. A big giveaway, with lots of chances to enter and win.

The first item up for grabs is one of my absolute favorite products. SoapNuts - a 100% natural laundry and cleaning product grown and harvested on trees from Asia, packaged and sold from here in the USA.
I use SoapNuts on all my clothes, fabric and any crafting/sewing supplies I prewash. The little berries (they aren’t actually nuts, they are dried berries/fruit) are filled with saponin a natural cleansing agent that can handle anything. They are safe to use on delicate fabrics, cloth diapers (I use them on mine), safe for people with sensitive skin or skin problems like eczema (which we deal with in my house) and gentle for babies (my daughter had her clothes done in this) yet it’s also tough enough to get out nasty dirty spots from clothes (I have a toddler, who likes to be dirty and I don’t like stains – trust me on this one) and towels and things. I find that they leave our clothes and towels feeling softer than normal (I don’t use any fabric softener) and I love that they last me so long (I order the largest package that Laundry Tree sells, and it lasts me at least 6 months or more).
I will warn you that SoapNuts have their own natal scent to them – but after washing, your clothes will be fragrance free, the SoapNuts leave behind no odors – either their own, or the ones your clothes had to start with. If you prefer your clothes to have a soft scent, Laundry tree carries both Essential and Fragrance oils that you can add to your wash for pleasant scents. The only thing I have found my SoapNuts unable to compete with is my husbands nasty stinky clothes after he spends a day working outside in the garden in the middle of our Texas summers. The SoapNuts get the gunk out, but not all the funk – so I add about half a cup of white vinegar to that load and everything works out great!
You can also make a liquid detergent from the SoapNuts to use in your washer, to clean around the house (works GREAT on glass in your mirrors or windows) or as soap or shampoo if you’d like.

This giveaway is for one Starter Kit of SoapNuts which contains enough soapnuts and frangrance to wash nearly 40 loads of laundry with SoapNuts:
- -one 100 gram bag of SoapNuts
- -one 1 ounce bottle of scent in either Lavender or Energy Blend (which are two of my favorites)
- -one extra washbag
- -one sample bag to share with a friend! (Once you’ve been converted – because trust me you will)
But, that’s not all this giveaway has to offer!!

Along with the starter kit of SoapNuts, the winner of this giveaway will receive two reusable tote bags. The two bags are made of cotton canvas in natural color, measure 15″x16″x5″ (yes, that’s a 5″ gusset so they are extra roomy), and are free of decoration or embellishment and are waiting for you to add your own personal touch. I buy these things by the dozen so that I always have a few on hand to decorate for friends or family as last minute gifts, or just to use myself to carry books to/from the library, church or bible study, or to use at the store, as overnight bags, or anything else you can dream up. They are also a great size for handling fabrics and craft supplies.
But wait, there’s more!
For every 5 entries in the giveaway, I’ll add another prize to the package (yes, I have more to give, and trust me, they are great items too!)! How neat does that sound!
So, here’s the Nitty Gritty:
Contest is only open to residents of the US (sorry international folks!) with a valid mailing address.
In order to enter, leave a comment with one way you are either A) celebrating Earth Day today or B) trying to be more “green” in general.
Contest is open from 5am to 10pm (central Time) on Thursday April 22,2010
For additional entries, do any (or all) of the following and leave seporate comments for each action:
- Subscribe to the blog (in the left hand toolbar under email subscriptions)
- Tweet about the giveaway, just copy and past this to your twitter feed:
- Blog about the giveaway, making sure to include a link back to this post.
Remember for every 5 entries (that’s not 5 people, but 5 entries, so if you utilize all the extra entry options those count!) the prize tally goes up!
We use cloth diapers and wipes.
We try to reuse, recycle, or compost everything (no trash!). We’re not there yet, but we’re getting closer.
By celebrating Earth Day today my daughter (20 months) and I will be planting wildflowers in our yard as well as some more lettuce (toads ate mine) in our garden. We are also walking down to the beach instead of driving and picking up trash that the tourists have left. The beaches are just too pretty to leave dirty! And no tv tonight! No dora!
and now I’m a subscriber! I don’t know why I didn’t do this before! You’re on my daily reads blogroll on my blog too

Ooh, I’d love to win this – I’ve been wanting to try out soapnuts!
We have been recycling, reusing plastic water bottles and bags, and we also have a motion-sensing light in our basement (to save electricity re: not forgetting to turn it off) and a CFL light in our garage.
Thank you for the giveaway!

I’m usually good about using reusable mugs, but this week I have made sure not to purchase drinks in disposable containers and bring my own mug 100% of the time!
